I recently found this site & I hope it helps! I've been biting my nails my whole life. I've tried many different things, but nothing it working. One year from October 16th, I will be getting married! I desperately want to stop biting & have beautiful nails on my wedding day. I know this is anonymous, but I don't care if you know my name is Sandra. Nice to 'meet' everyone!

Sandra,

Lots of luck. I am rooting for you. Nobody should bite their nails. It's an awful habit.

Hello everyone! I am a newbie :-) Hope we can all help each other out. I have tried EVERYTHING under the sun to stop this horrible habit, so I thought hey, what the hell? I have been biting my nails since I cut my first tooth. It hurts to wash them, it hurts to get in the shower in the morning, it hurts when it's cold out, when I eat peel 'em & eat 'em shrimp, when I squeeze lemons, you get the picture. I'm curious about everybody else. How obsessive is everyone about their habit? I have gotten so bad that I actually get clippers out and cut my nails down shorter because I literally cannot bite them. It's so disgusting and I'm so embarressed about it. I do not know why I have started to do this. My boyfriend is going nuts. Can anyone help or at least give some insight? And please don't reply that I'm nuts, because I know. :-) Thanks!!

Boy can I relate to what you say. 61 years old and have never had finger nails. So far this year it has been worse then ever. It is so bad I'm running out of nails to even try to bite. This compulsion can't be any less worse then drugs, I just can't stop.

Hello everyone! I just found this site, and I'm not sure if it'll help me to quit my life long habit.....but I'd like to give it a shot! I sometimes go months of no biting, then fall right back into it for some unknown reason. Once I've started again, it's usually several weeks before I get the nerve to try and quit again. The only way I've been successful so far is by using two products. One is called "STOP" and the other "Stop & Grow". They both come in a small glass bottle the same size as nail polish. Once I make up my mind that I want to quit again, I'll go and find the stuff and put it on. It has the most disgusting taste, and if forget I'm wearing it and bite, I have to run and rinse my mouth out right away. The stuff doesn't wash off for several hand washes, then needs to be re-applied. IF, I keep up with it, I can grow my nails out and they look great! But, for some insane reason, there are times that I have it sitting right in front of me, but I don't put it on. I don't understand why it is I actually do this. It's almost like I'm enjoying the punishment but hate myself for doing it. Weird. Anybody else experience something similar?

Dear Laurie,

Thank you for commenting here. Your description of your problem is very typical of what many who visit here, or belong here as a member have faced. That you are reaching out is a big step in the right direction. It indicates your desire to get your nail biting under control.

I believe there are stages or levels of nearly every bad habit or addiction. For instance, some smokers quit cold turkey with little problem, while others try repeatedly but continue to fall back to their old habits. With your repeat pattern, I suspect you are more hard core than others who are only mildly affected by this habit.

A fundamental truth is in order to quit for good you must want to stop nail biting more than you want to bite your nails. That you would knowingly avoid putting on the polish indicates you are not quite ready to quit. That you are writing here indicates you may be ready to step up to quitting now. A part of the problem could be that the cure you have chosen is nearly as negative as the habit itself.

I think deterrents are a good way to get a habit reversal program begun. The problem with them is they are only for the beginning phases of quitting. Once you have successfully quit for a while, you no longer wear the polish making you vulnerable to starting again when a trigger events overcomes you.
In other words, you are defenseless beyond the nasty polish phase. And, the polish does not teach you new habits, or ways to calm and center yourself so you can resist the urge, which again leaves you defenseless.

Reversing a deeply ingrained habit, one that you repeat over and over every day, one that gives you some relief or satisfaction, (at least to the point of when you stop out of shame or because you've hurt yourself or both), is never easy. It takes a system that you can use anywhere anytime to employ. Something you commit to in a way you never have before.

I make no apologies for offering my book, How to Stop Nail Biting, here. That is because I know without a doubt if you follow my plan, you will teach yourself to quit biting your nails. And, I back that up with a full 90-day moneyback guarantee. In other words, you have nothing to lose with this offer but your nail biting habits. The book is only $12.95, which is about the price of the nasty tasting polish. Give it a try, it could just be the thing that changes your life. It worked for me and many others.

Short Video on How to Stop Nail Biting

There is a short video with some worthy advice on reducing stress as a way to quit nail biting. I posted on the Quit Nail Biting Now blog. Of course, I had to put in my two cents on why simplistic advice, even with good suggestions and intentions, is far from enough to gain mastery over the devilishly hard process of learning how to stop nail biting permanently.

Perfection, Reality and Honesty

If the world were perfect, no one would bite their nails. We would all be some kind of fictional characters with no problems or physical deficiencies. Well, we know that is not accurate, or even close to being so. The same is true when it comes to conquering nail biting. It is an uphill battle to fight off the impulses we have lived with for years.

I have a discussion I just posted here. It is about my book now being available in paperback. I hope you will give it a try as I sincerely believe i… Continue
