Hi Sarah,
You can find the STOP or STOP & GROW products in most pharmacies. Now, I don't know where it is you live, but I used to live in Canada (now the Republic of Panama), so the names of the products might be different.
Good Luck!

Hello all,

Well, I am definitely a nail biter. The worse part is that I don't even realize that I'm doing it. I have tried those products that taste bitter but I simply keep going. I often find myself in the middle of the day and wondering why my mouth has that nasty taste...until I look at my nails and find that I've been chewing on them ever since I left the house. I have seen others with worse nails than mine, but its simply not enough to stop me from biting them. Argh!!! so the battle rages on.

I'm not sure if I should recommend this or not... Americans are over-medicated as it is. I am a terrible nail biter. I've bitten my pinky nail completely off before, and my fingers always hurt. I have successfully quit before, and I thought it might be helpful to share how. My doctor prescribed a drug called Abilify (he actually gave it to me for nailbiting) and instantly I quit biting my nails. It was amazing-- and happened as soon as I popped the first pill. While I was on the medicine (which is an anti-anxiety medicine-- maybe anxiety is why I bite my nails?), I never bit my nails once, and grew them out so that I was able to wear red polish (a first!)

Maybe it's worth talking to your doctor about?

Some warnings, though. Abilify is a serious medication with possible serious side affects. Talk to your doctor to make sure it is right for you. You will also need a good insurance, as it can be quite costly. Finally, the reason I quit is because it made me gain weight. I had beautiful nails, but gained 10lbs. That said, I think you can combat the weight gain if you're physically active, etc.

I've been biting my nails since forever like most of you. But last month I vowed to STOP for real this time. I took pictures of my hands and everytime i feel weak i look at them. It's really hard and I know i can't do it alone. It's been 2 1/2 weeks and I've only bitten my nails once. I've learned it's all in your head. No one can tell you to stop it has to come from yourself. But the effort i'm putting in to stop myself, is a million times more rewarding and harder then actually biting them. I'm just tired of bitng my nails and my cuticles and esp tired of obsessing about it. Anyone else make a vow recently? Let's help eachother out!!!

Hi Nora,
You are on the right track. Just getting the true desire is a great start. It takes more than that to get to the point of putting this habit behind you. Even when you have had some success for a few weeks, you need a way to avoid and avert the deeply ingrained habit. You can learn to try to figure this out on your own. It just takes extra dedication or more than just a vow. Vows are good things. You need a way to hold yourself accountable that is not like anything you have done before because it will take that and more to quit for good. Although I didn't start this site with the purpose of helping to sell my book, there are situations where I think it is appropriate to suggest purchasing it. This is one of them. Would you be willing to spend $15 to quit nail biting? That's what the book costs. It gives you a way to begin to understand how you work up to nail biting, or to recognize your routine, so you can start to avoid the temptation or throw off the ritual before it gets underway. It gives you a way to divert your energy and attention from nail biting when the temptation comes over you and it gives you the basics for what you need in the way of tools and techniques to maintain healthy nails. In other words, it is a complete system that takes into account your greatest temptation after you overcome the initial few days is later on when you are relaxed and not really thinking about nail biting on a daily, hourly basis. What do you do then? If you can find a way to manage that after learning to quit and grow your nails, you give yourself the best shot of quitting for good. What ever path you take, best wishes for success in growing your nails long and healthy. Oh, by the way, the book is How to Stop Nail Biting Stubbs NoMore

Short Video on How to Stop Nail Biting

There is a short video with some worthy advice on reducing stress as a way to quit nail biting. I posted on the Quit Nail Biting Now blog. Of course, I had to put in my two cents on why simplistic advice, even with good suggestions and intentions, is far from enough to gain mastery over the devilishly hard process of learning how to stop nail biting permanently.

Perfection, Reality and Honesty

If the world were perfect, no one would bite their nails. We would all be some kind of fictional characters with no problems or physical deficiencies. Well, we know that is not accurate, or even close to being so. The same is true when it comes to conquering nail biting. It is an uphill battle to fight off the impulses we have lived with for years.

I have a discussion I just posted here. It is about my book now being available in paperback. I hope you will give it a try as I sincerely believe i… Continue
