Nail Biters Anonymous

Discover how to stop biting your nails with Nailbinon

I have been biting my nails since i could chew, and the fact that i used to be a major tomboy doesnt help either, but i have finally come to realize that long nails arent that bad. Even though i am only 16 i still would like to start growing them out, but i have been biting them for so long i cant stop! Over the summer i used sally hansen maximum growth it worked, but a couple weeks later i went into a relapse, and bit them again, oh and that stuff you put on your nails to make it taste bad when you bite them, doesnt work for me ive grown immune to the taste, so if there is anyone who can help me with my "addiction", please do so it will be very much appreciated.

Hi Jen,

Thanks for posting your comments here. I hope we continue to grow this forum and get more people involved. Over time, we will all help each other quit and stay off the "addiction", as you put it. Nail biting may not be a classic addiction, and so there is no money or research to help with the problem. But, ask any person seriously affected by the problem and they will tell you it feels like trying to quit the worst addiction problem. Personally, I know people who have quit drinking and smoking, but still bite their nails.

The first thing you have done to help yourself is to acknowledge the problem and reach out to try and find help. I don't believe anyone can quit until they muster the strength and resolve that they are seriously going to quit. In other words, you have to want to quit more than you want to bite your nails. As long as the biting habit remains supreme over your shame of bitten nails and desire to rid yourself of the habit, you are not going to get lasting results.

I think anyone can quit for a while using sheer willpower or some products like those you mention. To quit for good, you have to replace the old habit with something new. In a vaccuum you are sure to relapse at the wrong time. That is what happens when you don't have a system or reliable techniques you can use at the moment you are tempted.

I wish you the best of luck in gaining the upper hand on your nail biting problem.

Short Video on How to Stop Nail Biting

There is a short video with some worthy advice on reducing stress as a way to quit nail biting. I posted on the Quit Nail Biting Now blog. Of course, I had to put in my two cents on why simplistic advice, even with good suggestions and intentions, is far from enough to gain mastery over the devilishly hard process of learning how to stop nail biting permanently.

Perfection, Reality and Honesty

If the world were perfect, no one would bite their nails. We would all be some kind of fictional characters with no problems or physical deficiencies. Well, we know that is not accurate, or even close to being so. The same is true when it comes to conquering nail biting. It is an uphill battle to fight off the impulses we have lived with for years.

I have a discussion I just posted here. It is about my book now being available in paperback. I hope you will give it a try as I sincerely believe i… Continue
