Nail Biters Anonymous

Discover how to stop biting your nails with Nailbinon

As a kid, I was nagged mercilessly by my mother who reacted with such disgust to my nail-biting that I thought there was something seriously wrong with me. I eventually saw a professional in my 20s who said I am normal, but fall into a statistical subgroup of adult males world-wide (about 10%), who are chronic nail-biters, and may be for life. That counseling helped me overcome the worry, shame and guilt because I could not stop the habit. About 6 years ago, out of the blue I lost the urge and stopped for about 3 weeks. But then the urge returned and I began chewing my nails to nubs again. I hope anyone out there who wants to quit can do so. In my case, I am not embarrased to do it at any time, even in public. While there are those who may be offended by it, most people accept me as I am - an athletic and healthy man who happens to bite his nails.

Peter,

Thanks for your comment. It's true, there may be some for whom quitting nail biting is not ever going to happen. In my book, I talk about smokers with cancer who have had a larynx removed and have a hold in their esophageous to help them breathe. I've known some devoted addicted smokers who continued to smoke using the hole. That sounds crazy, but points to a level of problem that is out of the normal range. For those smokers and for you, perhaps you are hopelessly hooked on your habit to the point of not being able to stop.

If that is your case, you seem to have become resolved with the issue. I'm not sure my book would help you. It is primarily written for the garden variety nail biter who needs some help getting over their habit. For those types, it works well, for seriously committed nail biters such as yourself, I'm not sure. That is why I offer a 90-day refund. If what I offer doesn't work, I don't want some one's money. This is not some big publishing company. It's just me with a little ebook trying to offer help for a serious problem that I don't think most people need to live with. When I consider the time and money invested to create this site and write the book, it will take 2 or more years of sales to recoup my investment. But, that's okay, if I had wanted to get rich on an ebook, I would have written a get rich from ebooks book.

Best wishes for your future with or without nails. You may have resigned yourself to the problem, but if you can find a way to beat it, you'll learn life is easier with nails. Whether picking up paper from a slick floor, cards on a table, typing or just taking a pretty lady's hand, it's better with normal nails to the fingertips than without them. But, as you know there are many worse habits than nail biting too.

Stubbs,

Thanks for your thoughful and incisive reply. What you say is what I learned in counseling. I have joined blogs and discussions on the topic because I do not want anyone to think they are immature or crazy if they are compulsive nail-biters. As I said, I wish everyone with the habit could stop. But they should not be ashamed if they cannot. As an aside, I was able to stop heavy smoking after 20 years, which I started at about age 12. I developed a severe sinus condition which made me adverse to smoking. But I still love to eat my nails.

I figure, after 45 years of intensive training for my part, I'm like you... probably never gonna stop.!?!? I could quit cigarettes easy, at age 20 after only 8 years.. but my stressful life growing up.. which led to a stressful life after leaving coz...???? I only remember 2 months of not chewing like a crazy-animal frenzying when I was 20. I can never re-live it.. My dear children have caught my horrid addiction. My son isn't too bad at it, but my 2nd daughter cannot seem to stop. It doesn't help that she had a high=stress job at an insurance company!?
I still hope to try hypnosis at least once for this nasty habit.!? I do have some little white gloves that I got for a photography class, I just may have to wear them and get some false nails put on...(I haven't tried them yet).

I'm one of the really hard-wired hard-core nail-biting cases. Perhaps because I am a guy most people do not seem to mind my nubby fingers. I have even been told the habit makes me look rugged, which of course is silly. As a family and career man, I would like to appear more refined and dignified but my constant nail-biting prevents me from cultivating that type of image. When I discussed the psychological issues several years ago in counselling, I was advised not to worry about and learn to live with my habit because I may never stop. I am still bothered by it but am essentially a healthy and happy individual. As I was told, you can live a happy and productive life even if you bite your nails.

I bite my nails not to the point of bleeding but just so they are short compared to other girls finger nails I also bite the skin around my finger nails and the insides of my cheeks. I've gotten a manicure before with acrylic nails and they bothered me obsessively at first I would just lightly bite the tips over and over again with the urge to rip them off, then after about five days I peeled all of them off much to the disappointment of my grandmother who paid for them. I don't know what to do I've tried stopping and I have no clue why I do it. It might be stress or boredom I have no clue.

Short Video on How to Stop Nail Biting

There is a short video with some worthy advice on reducing stress as a way to quit nail biting. I posted on the Quit Nail Biting Now blog. Of course, I had to put in my two cents on why simplistic advice, even with good suggestions and intentions, is far from enough to gain mastery over the devilishly hard process of learning how to stop nail biting permanently.

Perfection, Reality and Honesty

If the world were perfect, no one would bite their nails. We would all be some kind of fictional characters with no problems or physical deficiencies. Well, we know that is not accurate, or even close to being so. The same is true when it comes to conquering nail biting. It is an uphill battle to fight off the impulses we have lived with for years.

I have a discussion I just posted here. It is about my book now being available in paperback. I hope you will give it a try as I sincerely believe i… Continue
