Dear Una.de.Nancy,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and experiences. That you found this place and took the time to join shows you have desire to quit. That's a big part of conquering your nail biting habit. I've repeatedly said a key to stop nail biting is to first muster the determination to quit. In other words, you have to want to quit more than you want to bite. We've all lived with embarrassment and inconvenience of bitten nails, and managed to cope despite the problems that come with it.

Having your nails so conveniently attached to your fingers makes them an easy attractive target. Ones you can't get away from short of wearing gloves. I think it comes down to quitting first, however you can make that happen with will power, gloves, hypnotism or what have you. But the real problem is in not reverting to your longtime ingrained habit, especially in times of high stress or other situations that trigger biting sessions.

Being able to recognize what triggers your biting sessions and then having some methods you believe in to avert your desire to bite your nails is how you quit for good. At least, that is what worked for me. I realized after a while that things that helped me quit short term were not really reprogramming me to quit for good. Once I got clear on that, I was able to work on ways to quit for good.

It was real work and I took the challenge seriously and still do. There are still times when I feel a rough cuticle or ragged nail and start to go into my previous habits that always led to biting nails or pulling cuticles. Now, I have a way to avoid those situations. Work on those ideas and you can quit too.

All the best,

Stubbs
